A consent registry for faces
Register your face once and say whether AI image and video tools may use it. Platforms that generate people check the registry before they make someone's face.
How it would work
- You register once. Your entry records your choice: do not use my likeness, or use it only on terms you have agreed to, such as a licence to one company until a set date.
- Platforms check before generating. When a face appears in an upload or in a generated image, the platform asks the registry whether that face has an entry.
- They get a yes or no, nothing more. The answer says whether the face is registered, what the entry allows and how well it is verified. It never includes a name, an identity or any face data.
How well an entry is verified
Every entry says how sure the registry is that it was made by the person in it: a live selfie, a government ID with a live selfie, or a passport chip read by phone. The registry decides what each level can trigger, and platforms may only be stricter. A photo that nobody has verified is never matched.
What it never does
- Sell or hand out face data, to anyone.
- Make faces searchable. Nobody can use it to find out who a face belongs to.
- Keep the images platforms send to be checked. They are deleted once checked.
How it is meant to run
Registering will be free. The registry is meant to be neutral, not owned by any platform that checks against it, with an open specification so any platform can connect.
